It has been a long time since we read anything about chess in the Czech highest-circulation newspaper. Can we even remembre? On Monday, December 1, Blesk published almost full-page coverage from the match between the Lasses and the Old Stagers with a clear headline: „Czech beauty smashed Karpov“.
Blesk informed about fantastic victory of the Czech WGM Jana Jackova over ex-world chess champion. Anatoly Karpov lost in 22 moves and it was only his second such loss within 50 years of his career.
During the tournament grand opening celebration at the hotel Cristal Palace in Marianske Lazne the reigning freestyle footbag champion of the world Vasek Klouda, magician Stepan Smid and caricaturist Jaroslav Dostal performed.
In the first round of the match on Saturday 29th, white Lasses literally crushed legends whoose day was really “black”. Karpov lost to Jackova and Fridrik Olafsson to Anna Ushenina. Wolfang Uhlmann who forgot to check how much time he had was beaten by Viktorija Cmilyte. Only Vlastimil Hort managed to score full point for the Old Stagers.
In the second round on Sunday 30th, the Old Stagers stroke back and took full advantage of the white pieces. The program started with one minute silence kept for IM Robert Wade who passed away on Saturday. Then it was all about the fight on the chess board. Cmilyte lost to Karpov, Ushenina to Hort, Jackova was beaten by Uhlmann. The match between Katerina Nemcova and Fridrik Olafsson ended in a draw.
After first weekend the Old Stagers took the lead 4,5-3,5.
Prague Chess Society is preparing release of two extraordinary chess book this year. The first book will be a compilation of games, played by the legendary Grandmaster Bobby Fisxher, who passed away this year. The books will cover 23 games played by the American Grandmaster against Czech grandmasters Ludek Pachman, Miroslav Filip, Lubomir Kavalek and Vlastimil Hort. Games will be commented on by Grandmasters Pachman, Navara, Kavalek and Hort. The other book which is being prepared, is a monograph about the first Czech Master Karel Opocensky. This book too is co-written by Grandmasters Vlastimil Hort and Lubomir Kavalek together with Vitezslav Houska, who half a century ago wrote a book about Opocensky, called Above All World's Chessbords.
