Hort with Karpov led Old Timers to triumph

Old Timers proved that they are still great players and Lassies that future is ahead of them. In the tournament of chess legends (Karpov, Hort, Olafsson, Uhlmann) and promising young players (Cmilyte, Ushenina, Němcová, Jacková) grandmasters managed to win 17,5 : 14,5.
The two-rounded Scheveningen match, which was taking place from 28.11. till 6.12. 2008 in Marianske Lazne at Cristal Palace Hotel, was a dramatic one. The results were changing dramatically each round, alternating as often as white figures. After the round five, the result was 10:10. In the round seven Old Timers manage to get into four point lead, which they were able to keep till the end of the tournament.

The best personal result was reached by Czech grandmaster with a German passport, Vlastimil Hort, who in eight round gained 6,5 points with admirable rating performance 2685 ELO. Out of the young female players, the best one was Lithuanian grandmistress Viktorije Cmilyte, who gained 4,5 points in eight games.

The winning of Grandmaster Hort, playing with black figures, against Ukrainian Grandmistress Anna Usenina in Leningrad variation of Dutch defence, was awarded the best game of the tournament.
Mainly due to the fantastic winning of grandmistress Jana Jackova in the first round over Anatolij Karpov, the chess tournament ‘Old Timers versus Lassies’ attracted a huge media interest. The coverage from the tournament was broadcasted during evening news by all TV stations and all the major papers as well as internet servers reported on the tournament.

The world's most famous female chessplayer is coming to Prague

Prague Chess Society is preparing release of two extraordinary chess book this year. The first book will be a compilation of games, played by the legendary Grandmaster Bobby Fisxher, who passed away this year. The books will cover 23 games played by the American Grandmaster against Czech grandmasters Ludek Pachman, Miroslav Filip, Lubomir Kavalek and Vlastimil Hort. Games will be commented on by Grandmasters Pachman, Navara, Kavalek and Hort. The other book which is being prepared, is a monograph about the first Czech Master Karel Opocensky. This book too is co-written by Grandmasters Vlastimil Hort and Lubomir Kavalek together with Vitezslav Houska, who half a century ago wrote a book about Opocensky, called Above All World's Chessbords.
