Snowdrops and Oldhands – Czech Coal Chess Match 2012

Snowstorm in the first round

[09.12.2012 00:00:00] - Director of the school PORG Václav Klaus draw white figures for the team of Snowdrops for the first round and a real snowstorm came the next day to frosty Poděbrady. On Saturday, the first round finished by the victory of Tania Sachdev (over Wolfgang Uhlmann), Valentina Gunina (over Fridrik Olafsson) and Alina Kašlinskaja (over Vlastimil Hort). Only Oleg Romanišin managed to draw with black figures and so after his game with Kristýna Havlíková, the team of Snowdrops has taken the lead with the points 3,5 – 0,5.

All four games worth being replayed, the audience in hotel Zámeček appreciated as more attractive the harsh offensive game of women Champion of Europe, Valentina Gunina (replayed games).

Saturday´s morning started by the simultaneous game of grandmaster Jan Smejkal angainst 13 adversaries in the hotel´s hunting lounge. Vlastimil Chládek, Vojtěch Trochta, Michal Špaček, Jiří Krátký, Jan Hruška and Martin Vesecký managed to draw with this legendary czech grandmaster. Thus in total, grandmaster Smejkal won 10 : 3.

On Sunday, you can come to see not only the second round of the match Sněženky a Machři – Czech Coal Chess Match 2012, but also to celebrate 100 years from the birth of czech chess master Jiří Podgorný. To this occasion, the exposition describing his life has been prepared. The commemoration will be held by his son Igor and Podgorný´s friend Josef Maršálek. Vernissage of the exposition called 100 years of Jiří Podgorný starts at 2 p.m. in hotel Záměček in Poděbrady.

Mayor of Poděbrady Ladislav Langr (left) reminded not only the spa history of the town, but also the famous chess tournament held in Poděbrady in 1936, among whose participants was Alexandr Aljechin and where Salo Flohr became the winner.
