[03.12.2013 00:00:00] - The third round has brought us a great thrust of the Snowdrops. Mariya Muzychuk has embarked sharply on Wolfgang Uhlmann. However, the Oldhand booted himself in this tricky situation when he made, with “calm hand”, a castling under the attack of the white. Mariya tried to make a sacrifice and so a really sharp position was set in. In that position, where the last mistake was made by the Oldhand, and so the snowdrop could win. But if there was a right 22…Qxe5!, the Oldhand would be the one to celebrate.
Alina Kashlinskaya also pestered Boris Gulko uncomfortably. The Oldhand started a bit casually and so he got himself under positional pressure. However, the white did not continue precisely. She needlessly pulled out pawns on queens' wing and so she decided to agree with a draw. Iossif Dorfman was also busy with Viktorija Cmilyte. He has lost a lot of time in the beginning and a critical position came after 15…Qf4. The white continued easily by taking on e6, after what the Oldhand could resist without any problems while the white had several interesting moves with dangerous initiative, for example 16.Re1 or 16.Ne5.
The only one of the Oldhands who had a good position after the beginning was Borislav Ivkov with Anastasia Zjazjulkina. He played a smart variant of the French with 6…b6!?. By the way, it is the same as the one in which he had beaten Bobby Fischer and so he disconcerted his opponent. The white did not continue the right way (the plan of continuing with a pawn on a6 is doubtful) but still the position was very complicated. In the closing position the Oldhand had too little time and so he agreed with a draw. It is not clear what to do against the plan Kd2 with Na3 and Nb5. The close loss of the Oldhands is just, but I believe – as a fan of the Oldhands – that the main thrust of the Oldhands will come soon.
