CZECH COAL CHESS MATCH - Snowdrops and Old-hands

Round II.

In the second round the Old Stagers stroke back . Winning three and drawing one game they took the lead in the Czech Coal Chess Match 2008 against Lasses.
The Sunday program started with one minute silence kept for IM Robert Wade who passed away on Saturday. Then it was all about the fight on the chess board. Widely expected match was that one between both team leaders – Anatoly Karpov and Viktorija Cmilyte. In Grunfeld-Indian Defense former world champion decided to sacrifice both of his bishops to weaken the position of the Black queen's-side pawns. In a dynamic position Grandmaster Karpov spent a lot of time thinking about his twelfth move. This surprised even his second Michail Podgajec. When we asked why mr. Karpov thinks so long about the move he answered: “I really dont know. When we have been going through this position he said he will move c-knight to e2.“ Opening of Viktorija Cmilyte was good but in the thirteenth move she opted for a quick ending with minor disadvatage. Then audience watched a brilliant Karpov who transformed his slight advantage into a full point.

The only player whit 100% run so far is Grandmaster Vlastimil Hort. Ukrainian star Anna Ushenina achived very good position after opening and resisted for very long. As winner later said her troubles started with queen's move to b4. “She practicaly allow me to liberate my knight from covering d4-pawn. Then I could move it to g1 and then to beautiful position in the chess board centre,“ says GM Hort and continues: “My position was then very good and I think it did not fit my opponent at all.“ White took initiative on the king's-side which was stronger with every move and it was only a matter of time when Black will win. That happened on 39th move.

Satisfaction for his yesterday's defeat got Wolfgang Ullmann who played the English game and beat the hero of the opening day IM Jana Jackova. In complicated possiton he sacrificed quality to shut down all attacking possibilities and despite resilient defense she could not stop wave of his pawns on both flanks. The only score won by Lasses was of WGM Katerina Nemcova's draw in a quick game with Fridrik Olafsson. After second round the Old Stagers took the lead 4,5:3,5.

Today on the third round Anna Ushenina will meet Anatoly Karpov, Viktorija Cmilyte will try to stop Vlastimil Horst's run, Katerina Nemcova will face Wolfgang Uhlmann and Jana Jackova will try to gain her second point against Fridrik Olafsson.
