ČEZ CHESS TROPHY 2010

Tracing the legendary Vera Menchik

Thursday 22. 4., 4 p.m. – Michna Palace

Do you know anything about the first world women's chess champion Vera Menchik club? Would you like to be a member of such a club? Do you agree with the stance – "Alas for man rule by women?"
“Never mind if I get beaten, the main thing is to put on a fight!” this is a likely attitude this first chess "amazon" showed to her man collegues.
Vera Menchik was born in Moscow in 1906 to a Czech father and English mother. Until 1937 Vera competed for Czechoslovakia. The famous first women's chess champion (1927 – 1944) chose to leave the world voluntarily and her tragic end leads to a clear conclusion that wars should be fought only on chessboards.
I admit that I would very much like to be a member of Vera Menchik club. During my talk I am also going to point out certain connections between Menchik and Judit Polgar.
