IM Afek Lecture

Svidler vs. Navara – ČEZ CHESS TROPHY 2012

Tactical rook endings in classical games and in endgame studies

Lecture by IM Yochanan Afek
(23. 6. 2012 od 15:00)

Rook endings are the most common ones in the practice of competitive chess. They are mostly fairly technical and require high precision and a great deal of theoretical knowledge. Nevertheless Rook ending can sometimes be of more tactical nature either by the leading maestros over the board or at the hands of the great composers . In my lecture "Tactical rook endings in classical games and in endgame studies" I will try to show that these somewhat "dry" endings might turn highly entairtaining with plenty of tense and breathtaking moments be it with two or four rooks struggling each other and chasing dangerous passed pawns. More "real" and artistic great examples may be found in my recent book "De Toren" (written with the Dutch IM Hans Bohm) which will be available on the lecture day.
