Snowdrops and Oldhands 2013

Thrust of the Snowdrops

Thrust of the Snowdrops

[03.12.2013] - The third round has brought us a great thrust of the Snowdrops. Mariya Muzychuk has embarked sharply on Wolfgang Uhlmann. However, the Oldhand booted himself in this tricky situation when he made, with “calm hand”, a castling under the attack of the white. Mariya tried to make a sacrifice and so a really sharp position was set in. In that position, where the last mistake was made by the Oldhand, and so the snowdrop could win. But if there was a right 22…Qxe5!, the Oldhand would be the one to celebrate.

Alina Kashlinskaya also pestered Boris Gulko uncomfortably. The Oldhand started a ... [all]

Act two - four draws

Act two - four draws

[02.12.2013] - When regarding the results of the second round of the match Snowdrops and Oldhands – Vršanská uhelná chess match 2013 in Poděbrady, maybe you could say: „Boring“. But the contrary is truth. All four games were very dramatic and the draws were hardly fought. Wolfgang Uhlmann had a slight advantage over Viktorija Cmilyte, but one incorrectness transferred the advantage to Victorias side. But her advantage of two bishops was not enough to win and the game finished by a draw, just before the control move 40. Even Boris Gulko had an advantage playing against Anastasia Zjazjulkina, but one careles... [all]

Captains Morgan

Captains Morgan

[01.12.2013] - All the actors of the match had resolved the 8move composition of Mario Matouš surprisingly easily during the ceremony opening of Snowdrops and Oldhands. They didn´t even need to consult it with their captain.

The oldest of all grandmasters in hotel Zámeček, Pal Benko, had drawn colour of figures for the first round and so he decided the allocation of the captains as well. Oldhands were given the black captain Morgan, Snowdrops the blond one. For abstinents: it´s a rum whose taste excels the better with Coke and lime, and that belongs to the only doping tolerated on the trainings of ... [all]

Glorious grandmasters are coming to Podebrady

Glorious grandmasters are coming to Podebrady

[30.10.2013] - After winning of Soviet Union championship in 70´s grandmaster Boris Gulko chose not to emigrate, as Viktor Korčnoj, Genna Sosonko or Igor Ivanov, but he officially asked for permission to move out of the country. That caused seven years of bans on participating in chess tournaments and conflicts with Soviet police, demonstrations, hunger-strikes and short-term detention. When he was finally allowed to go behind the Iron Curtain, he moved to the USA, where he also won national championship. The brave Boris Gulko became the only chess player in the world to win both of the USA and USSR national... [all]

The most powerful finish of grandmaster Vlastimil Hort

The most powerful finish of grandmaster Vlastimil Hort

[16.10.2013] - The winner of the eleven-rounds tournament in rapid chess in the Chess Train 2013 is the legendary grandmaster Vlastimil Hort. The only one of the 87 chess players who had enough points to stick with him has been American chess player Alex Cherniack. The third is Pavel Benčo, who completely dominated the first two thirds of the tournament.

In the team tournament the winner was ERA, thanks to great amount of points from Pavel Benčo and Vladimír Bretšnajdr. The complete results can be found on Chess-Re... [all]

Chess Train 2013

Without limits

Without limits

[15.10.2013] - I was preparing an ironic article about the quality of Tyrol’s services but one hippie taxi driver with marguerite in her hair and the performance of Cirque de soleil changed my mind completely. It was show named Quidam - which was probably about the social problems of an unknown stranger in the anonymous world...but I was laughing from the beginning to the end, like during watching the film “Untouchables” and I was staring with child consternation at the acrobatics which was proving that the “impossible” is nonexistent category.

Meanwhile a venison from the neighbouring forests in r... [all]

Benčo’s Big Bang

Benčo’s Big Bang

[13.10.2013] - Friday’s snow blizzard was replaced by azure sky and thus the Chess train was greeted by fairy Alps. Sharply cut snowy peaks under blue sky. For that reason many of the chess players went out, immediately after arrival, to visit Hafelekarspitze (2334) by cableway departing from the centre of Innsbruck. Some of us in patent-leather shoes or even in sandals and finally everyone was knee-deep in snow.

Medieval Regensburg with stunning gothic cathedral and smiling angel, the oldest stone bridge to the north of the Alps, homely tavern famous for its grilled sausages (they are the inventio... [all]
