TRIATHLON OF MIXED DOUBLES

Grandmasters‘ net play

Grandmasters‘ net play

[20.09.2015] - The chess grandmasters Sergei Movsesian and Petr Neuman did not meet over the chessboard, but at the tennis and volleyball net instead. They took part in the second Triathlon of Mixed Doubles organised by the Prague Chess Society. On the last and tropical August Saturday, the grandmasters first competed on clay tennis courts at Hamrsport in Záběhlice, and then on grass volleyball courts at the U svatého Kryštofa Penzion, where they continued with playing chess in doubles.

All the great sport events (Olympics, Football World Cup) take place once every four years and the same applies t... [all]

GRANDMASTER VERSUS COMPUTER

Not even two pawns did the trick

Not even two pawns did the trick

[01.09.2015] - Komodo 9, the best chess computer program of today, heavily defeated grandmaster Martin Petr, even though he was given two pawns in each game. The final score 4.5 : 1.5 (3 victories of Komodo and 3 draws) is devastating. On Sunday the 23rd and on Monday the 24th of August, the Šachový Václavák chess café in the Juliš Hotel saw three games in a slow rapid tempo (45 min + 15 s / move) and the silicon monster was consecutively missing the pawns a+b, a+d and a+e in the opening positions.

Grandmaster Peter prepared the openings well and after the positions were settled, his was always a g... [all]

ČEZ Chess Trophy 2015

Wesley So wins 3:1

Wesley So wins 3:1

[17.06.2015] - Before the fourth game I had a talk about how to change middlegames into advantageous endgames. I tried to explain to my audience how important endgames are. It is hard to use advantageous endgames without properly understanding endgames. We looked at two (beautiful) examples of two chess geniuses, J. R. Capablanca and his admirer and successor J. R. Fischer. By the way, both chess giants really liked endgames and they often used the opportunity to change the middlegame into a better endgame.

Quite surprisingly, the fourth game of the match partly copied the third one. David surprised... [all]

ČEZ Chess Trophy 2015

Mark Dvoretsky’s Maltese cross

Mark Dvoretsky’s Maltese cross

[17.06.2015] - Mark Dvoretsky is another famous visitor who you might encounter at Michna Palace these days. The trainer of many world chess players and author of globally highly regarded books about chess began his talk on positions with heavy pieces on the fourth day of the ČEZ CHESS TROPHY 2015 festival. “The positions, where every side has a queen, a rook and a couple of pawns, are among the most interesting ones and I myself like them very much,” told me Mark when we were preparing the room for his talk. According to him, their difficulty lies in their ambiguity. They show attributes of middlegame and ... [all]

ČEZ Chess Trophy 2015

No tie (yet)

No tie (yet)

[16.06.2015] - The Czech fans pinned their hopes on the third game of the match between grandmasters David Navara and David So. After the defeat in the second game on Sunday, the Czech player had the advantage of white pieces, which many saw as an opportunity for a counter-attack.

But David is not very successful in the Prague duel. It might be the fatigue showing, because just before the Prague festival, David Navara attended two very difficult competitions (the Czech Chess Championship and The French League).

Not even in the third game did the Czech No 1 managed to benefit from the advant... [all]
