Wesley So on the road to triumph

[15.06.2015] - The ČEZ CHESS TROPHY 2015 festival continued on the third day, providing the chess enthusiasts with the same big portion of their beloved activity as in the previous days. The main Sunday event was preceded by an exhibition of historical Czech chess pieces from Petr Král’s collection.

“My aim is to make the public acquainted with a part of the chess history. The chess pieces known as ‘české klubovky’ have accompanied us since the end of the 19th century,” says the owner of the displayed pieces and adds that he has proofs of more than a hundred different kinds of them. Long evening with a happy ending

Long evening with a happy ending

[14.06.2015] - The second day of the CEZ CHESS TROPHY 2015 started with the book launch of the grandmaster David Navara’s book „Můj šachový svět“ (My Chess World). The best Czech chess player presented his book to the visitors, who completely filled up the room, and also explained how his first work came to life. The book stirred up everyone’s interest, which was apparent also from the long line of chess enthusiasts waiting for the author’s signature.

One hour later, the festival director Pavel Matocha commenced the opening game of the match. Playing with black pieces, the grandmaster So began with ... [all]

Filipino lightning

Filipino lightning

[13.06.2015] - The Filipino-American grandmaster Wesley So played a simul against 22 opponents (some of whom with ELO rating over 2200) in a quickfire tempo. On all the chessboards he opened with 1.e4 and those who responded with 1...e5 had to face the King’s gambit. As if the former world champion Boris Spassky himself was playing... After 100 minutes it was over: the grandmaster So won 18 games, three opponents managed to draw (the manager of ČEZ Jan Hruška, the Brazilian chess player Edouardo Moura, and the Czech chess talent of Vietnamese origin Thai Dai Van Nguyen) and one amazing victory went to anothe... [all]

Schnirch’s chess pieces and their offspring

[11.06.2015] - “I try to make the chess public acquainted with a part of the chess history – the Czech chess pieces called “české klubovky”. They have accompanied us since the end of the 19th century, and they still do even now. They exist in a wide variety of types, I myself have proofs of more than a hundred different kinds,” says the chess pieces collector Petr Král, whose collections are featured at the exhibition at ČEZ CHESS TROPHY 2015 festival.

The original shape of the “české klubovky” was designed in the 1880s by Bohuslav Schnirch, one of the most significant sculptors of the Czech Nationa... [all]

Chess posters

Master Velíšek’s painting

Master Velíšek’s painting

[21.04.2015] - After years of silence, the well-known artist Martin Velíšek has begun to paint again and one of his new works is a poster for the ČEZ CHESS TROPHY 2015 chess festival. The two depicted chess players radiate great concentration and energy, but also cheerful playfulness. Maybe they are playing, maybe they are just analysing; they stand at the chessboard like carved statues, objects of our interest and observation.

The chess festival, which will see a play of the best Czech chess player David Navara against the 7th best player in the world, the Filipino American grandmaster Wesley So, w... [all]
