CZECH COAL CARLSBAD CHESS TOURNAMENT 2007

Strongest attended tournament in the history of the Czech Republic including Czechoslovakia (17th FIDE category). The tournament was held to celebrate the centennial anniversary of holding the first international chess festival in Czech lands. The tournament was under patronage of Czech president Vaclav Klaus, who at the opening of the tournament gave Chess Legend Award 2007 to Grandmaster Viktor Kortchnoi, and also under patronage of Karlovy Vary district commissioner Josef Pavel and the mayor of Karlovy Vary Veronika Vlkova. Tournament guests of honor were world oldest living Grandmaster, ninety-six years old Andre Lilienthal, and also Grandmasters Lajos Portisch a Vlastimil Hort. Grandmaster Hort, together with the captain of Czech representation, Michal Konopka, commented the tournament.
Grandmasters Sergei Movsesian (the best Slovakian player) and Ruslan Ponomariov (a former FIDE world champion) gained the highest score, complementary valuation determined Grandmaster Movsesian as the winner of the tournament.

Two former world vice champions, Grandmaster Nigel Short and Grandmaster Jan Timman had competed in six games of rapid chess and in four games of Fischer random chess against the best Czech chessplayers Grandmaster David Navara and Grandmistress Jana Jackova. Grandmaster Short had played a simul against 30 VIP opponents.

World renowned trainer Mark Dvorecky had led a four day intensive chess concentration training of the Czech male representation, presented among others were GM David Navara, GM Viktor Laznicka, GM Tomas Polak, GM Radek Kalod, GM Tomas Oral, IM Pavel Simacek a FM Jan Suran. In addition Mark Dvorecky held a lecture for club players.
