ČEZ Chess Trophy 2015

Šafářová, Barcelona, and Navara

[08.06.2015 00:00:00] - Lucie Šafářová in the Roland Garros final; Barcelona in the Champions League final; Wesley So against David Navara in Prague: these are the sport highlights of the week. Another ČEZ CHESS TROPHY 2015 festival, which again brought one of the world top ten players to the Czech Republic, starts on Friday 12 June at Michna Palace on Kampa Island.

Come and see two of the best chess players in the world playing the royal game. The May FIDE rankings placed Wesley So on the 7th place and David Navara on the 14th. In the adjacent hall, their duel will be commentated by the grandmaster Rober Cvek, whom you can ask during the game about the moves the players had made and why your move would not have been a better one.

During ČEZ CHESS TROPHY 2015, you can also play against the Filipino-American grandmaster Wesley So. On Friday 12 June at 3 PM he will play a simul at Michna Palace, in which there are still last two places left (the ticket for the simul is CZK 2,990 and if you wish to play, do not hesitate to contact us at prazska.sachova@gmail.com).

During the festival you can also enjoy many accompanying events. On Monday 15 June, the best chess coach in the world, Mark Dvorecky, will give a lecture on how to play endgames with heavy pieces. On Sunday 14 June you can take a look at the vernissage of the chess pieces exhibition. Petr Král’s collection shows how the beautiful Czech sets (so called “Česká klubovka) changed in the course of the 20th century.

There will also be an opportunity to buy the grandmaster Navara’s book “Můj šachový svět” (My Chess World), which features his 51 most interesting games with engaging commentary, his autobiography, observations and experiences from chess tournaments, matches and leagues, and also the grandmaster’s own poems. The book launch of “Můj šachový svět”, published by the Prague Chess Society, will take place on Saturday 13 June at 3 pm at Michna Palace. The hardcover has 360 pages, includes dozens of photos and is available for CZK 390 (you can also purchase the book via e-mail and it will be sent to you by post, cash on delivery - prazska.sachova@gmail.com).

You can view the programme of the whole festival here.

David Navara and Wesley So are currently playing the French league and you can watch their performance online.
