ČEZ Chess Trophy 2015

Filipino lightning

[13.06.2015 00:00:00] - The Filipino-American grandmaster Wesley So played a simul against 22 opponents (some of whom with ELO rating over 2200) in a quickfire tempo. On all the chessboards he opened with 1.e4 and those who responded with 1...e5 had to face the King’s gambit. As if the former world champion Boris Spassky himself was playing... After 100 minutes it was over: the grandmaster So won 18 games, three opponents managed to draw (the manager of ČEZ Jan Hruška, the Brazilian chess player Edouardo Moura, and the Czech chess talent of Vietnamese origin Thai Dai Van Nguyen) and one amazing victory went to another manager of ČEZ, Libor Kičmer.

The simul opened the ČEZ CHESS TROPHY 2015 chess festival. At the evening opening ceremony held on a terrace with a view over the Franciscan garden, the mayor of Prague 1 Oldřich Lomecký greeted all participants of the festival and colours of the pieces for the first game were drawn. The grandmaster Wesley So drew the black ones.

The first game of the match between the grandmasters Navara and So begins today, on Saturday 14 June at 4 PM at Michna Palace on Kampa Island in Prague. The game will be commentated by the grandmaster Rober Cvek. And if you arrive at Kampa by 3 PM already, you can enjoy the book launch of David Navara’s book “Můj šachový svět” (My Chess World).

The grandmaster Wesley So needed only 1 hour and 40 minutes for the simul against 22 opponents.

One hour and forty minutes has been enough and Wesley So won the simul against twenty two opponents

Two players of the simul played with valuable old chess pieces, which will we displayed from Sunday until Tuesday at the exhibition of Czech chess pieces “české klubovky” at Michna Palace. Deputy managing director at Unicredit Bank Aleš Barabas on the left, chairman of the supervisory board of Mero and Čepro Ivan Souček on the right, who celebrated his birthday on the day of the simul.

Manager of ČEZ Libor Kičmer was the only one who managed to defeat the player from the world top ten.

At the opening ceremony at Juliš Hotel, Wesley So drew black pieces for the first game.

The mayor of Prague 1 Oldřich Lomecký and the office press agent Veronika Blažková attended the opening ceremony. Debating with them is the president of the Prague Chess Society Pavel Matocha.
